Mobile Data Usage Tracker

Mobile Data Usage is a very important factor when it comes to limiting your phone bills. With 3G and 4G being offered by Mobile service providers nowadays, we tend to overshoot our bandwidth limit and end up paying extra money. Most of the times its watching videos on YouTube and using the cloud service being offered by the phone providers which tend to increase our data usage. Even the Mobile apps downloaded are a main bandwidth guzzlers.

Android Phones

DROID STATS – I found loads of Mobile Data Usage tracker software in Android Market. What Grabbed my attention was this software called DROIDSTATS by Michael Ludwig.

This App is available for free from Android Market. This App once downloaded, Can be configured for various options including keeping a count of SMS/MMS, Incoming  and outgoing call minutes and Mobile Internet usage bandwidth. Just set the Billing cycle start date and and the counter starts ticking until you Manually refresh the data (optional). It Also gives you Various details like the top and least called numbers. Download the App from Android Market now and experience it yourself.

3G Watch Dog

3G watchdog which has similar but not as many options like DROIDSTATS is another option you can choose to download from. 3G watchdog as the name clearly states is a Mobile data monitor app only for Internet usage. It keeps a track of every byte of data sent and recieved from your smartphone and also gives you details about usage everyday, week and month. This is just a one page information you can use to calculate the data usage and very handy. It also gives you Wi-Fi data usage as well. Though we are least bothered about Wi-Fi data usage, we can get to know what is amount of data we use everyday on an average on phone.

iPhone /iPad

iPhone has a built in Data Usage checking option. Go to Settings – General – Usage. Here you can check the Network Data Usage only and this counter has to be manually refreshed whenever you want a new counter to start. You can either do it monthly when you billing cycle starts for Monthly stats or Daily if you need to know the Daily usage. However, by the end of the month if you are tracking it daily, you will not get details about the entire month. most of the Apps on iPhone and iPad are charged. There are a very few apps which are available for free.

Try DATAMAN which is available for free.
DataMan has almost (but not all) similar features of its Android Counterpart. It gives you details about Data Usage (GPRS,3G and 4G) and allows you to input the thershold and also billing cycle start date.

Onavo

Onavo is another wonderful tool which i came across recently that can monitor your data usage. Onavo is available for both iOS and Android phones and its free. Onavo does not monitor or track your Wi-Fi data usage. It just calculates your 2G, 3G and 4G data usage. It also gives you details about bandwidth used by every app that connects to the internet.

For instance, if you have used 100 MB of data, it will show you which App has consumed this bandwidth. It also gives a chart of your data usage and suggests a good plan according to your needs. Onavo is creeping up the ladder very fast as one of the best mobile Data widget.

Nokia Symbian

Nokia has DataMonitor Free in OVI store which will help you keep a track of your data usage. (Download and upload on home screen).

The premium version of this software (paid) will give you functionalities like setting data limit to check if you have exceeded the threshold and so on.

Windows Mobile store does not have any app till now which can monitor or track Data usage. If you are an App Developer, Contact Microsoft with your Data Usage checker App.
Also, Please note, Most of the Telecom service providers in US and many other countries provide their own Data Usage Tracker Apps for Free. You can use that and for others who do not have that provision from your Phone/Mobile Data service provider, you can use the apps mentioned here.

Disclaimer : There are loads of Mobile Apps for you to Track Mobile Data Usage, What i mentioned here are totally my views and as per my experience. Incase you have any App suggestion for Data Usage Tracker, Please leave your comment with the details.

Android Market is the official App download tool/site of Google
iPhone and iPad are registered products of Apple Inc and iTunes store is Apple’s official Store for App Download
OVI store is a registered store of Nokia
